Because of its inaccessibility, park remained more or less intact. no humans live in the park, habitat of several endangered mammals, especially the snow leopard, Himalayan musk deer and Bharal. Nanda Devi area has some of the most unique high altitude flora and fauna in the world. The spectacular views, sylvan environment, and richness of biosphere make it quite different from the other wildlife sanctuaries of India.
The trek is through the Jauher valley the center of ancient Indo Tibetan trade route. Once upon a time this was one of the most important commercial center with a throbbing civilization influenced by the Tibetan culture in so many ways. Which can still be seen in martoli village on the route.
