Since 1974 when Ladakh first became accessible to tourists, it has captured the imagination of adventure travellers.Your journey commences from New delhi.Reach Chandigarh by the Shatabdi express in less than 4 hours and then travel to Manali by road. Manali is one of the most famous destinations of Himachal Pradesh.It is a culmination of Nepali, Tibetian, and Ladakhi cultures.It offers a colourful and rich experience to the teeming populations of tourists who flock here every year. Places of interest are temples of Hadimba and Manu.Apart from the Hindu temples,other places of interest are the tibetian monastries and the local tibetian bazaar which is abundant in handicrafts and art souveniers.Next day, make your way to Darcha via the Rohtang pass(3980 mts).Rohtang pass forms the Gateway to the Zanskar valley.Enjoy the night in a camp. From Darcha, the trekking segment of the journey begins. Darcha is the last village of Himachal Pradesh, which you leave behind to make your way to Palemo. From Palemo, make your way to Zanskar Sumdo, which is the confluence of two rivers. The Sumdo here is flanked by pastures and rocky plateaus and this segement of the journey is a special treat to glacier lovers. Take a day's rest in Zanskar sumdo to acclimatize to the altitude. This will save you a lot of headache and nose bleeds. Next day start your trek towards Chumik Nakpo. From Chumik, trek to Lakhang over the Shingo La pass and camp there overnight. From Lakhang, make your way to Kargiak, which is the first village of Zanskar region, all the while enjoying the majestic beauty Gomborangoo peak. The next stop will be in the village of Purni.From Purni, enjoy the day long excursion to Phuktal Monastry. Phuktal is spectacular in its own right for its ancient monastry and its caves, with natural water springs which never seem to get exhausted of their supply of water, no matter how much you take out! The next significant locale is Padam. It is the sub divisional head quater of Kargil district. It was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of zanskar, boasting of a sizeable muslim population, apart from the usual buddhist population.Padum is an important trekking base. From Padum, drive down to Kargil which is historically very important as the hub of the pan asian trade route. From Kargil, make your way to the wonderous world of Leh.Leh is the capital of Ladakh and is also known as lLittle Tibet.Leh is brimming with tibetian and indian culture and offers a jaunty mix of both worlds. Places of visit in Leh are Leh Palace, Jama Masjid, and Phyang Monastry. In ladakh, places of tourist interests are the palace and Thiksey monastry, which a colossial structure, dedicated to buddhist art, literature, culture, and practice. It is worth while to spend some time in Ladakh before returning to the plains as it rests your weary feet and also rejuvinates you with its old world charm.
