The Ladakh Tour
Location
Ladakh, J&k
Overview
Ladakh has been described as the "last Shangrila", a monumentous example of tibetian culture and Buddhism. Nestled high in the Himalayas and accesible by road for only four months a year, adds to the aura of mystery and adventure that surrounds Ladakh. Better termed an expedition, this unique adventure will be the most exhilarating journey and the most humbling experience of your life. The rugged, unforgiving terrain of this land has a particularly exciting but humbling feel to it, as it makes one so aware of his vulnerability, when faced with the wrath of nature. The high point of this journey is your travel through Khardung La, the highest motorable pass in the world at 18,380 ft. From Delhi, catch a train to Kalka, from where make your way to Shimla via road. Spend a day of leisure, visiting this scenic and historic town which is the capital of Himachal pradesh. The next day , travel to Manali via road, through the towns of Mandi and Kullu, both abundant in Himachali culture and handicrafts. From Manali, travel to Sissu, via the famous Rhotang Pass which is at the height of 14,000 ft. Rohtang pass is the passage to the land of Ladakh, and once the check post formalities are completed, make your way to Sissu. Next camp halt will be at Brandy Nala. Follow the road, for 400 kms, via picturesque Keylong, and then further to Darcha, to then traverse Barchala la, which is a pass at the altitude of 16,000 ft, to finally reach Brandy nala and rest your travel weary soul. The next day, make your way to Pang. this entire road is maintained by the Army, and except for the patches of eroded concrete, these roads are fairly good. Do take your time to acclimatize to the altitude, or else you shall be victim to a rather uncomely bout of mountain sickness. While travelling to Pang, you cross the lovely Lachulang pass. Next day, make an early start for your next destination which is Stok. From Pang, the road rises upwards to reach the amazing Moore plain, which is the first point on the Tibetian Plateau. Cross the Tanglang la pass, met with the flighty glimpses of Ladakh, which awaits you ahead. You enter Ladakh at Upshi, from where you make your way to Stok. En route is the stunning tibetian monastry called Tekse. Next stop would be at Lamayuru, which harbours the oldest monastry of Ladakh dating backto the 10th century. From here, next day make your way to Leh via Alchi. Alchi is a small, hamlet, serves as a lunch stop, before making your way to the more elaborate and vibrant city of Leh, which is the capital of Ladakh. Spend the day, touring and exploring the corners and niches of Leh. This city will never cease to excite your curiosity with its versatile colours. This is the last stop before you return to dreary hustle and bustle of civilisation.
