Leading out of the small settlement of Darcha in Himachal Pradesh traversing the heart of Zanskar, this is one of the most popular treks in the valley. The beautiful Zanskar valley dotted with tiny oasis like villages and hamlets are bordered with swaying Willow and Poplar trees. On the way get to visit some ancient monasteries which are vividly and strikingly built on jagged sloping hillsides and also stop and meet the friendly Zanskari inhabitants. Quaint villages, high grassy meadows, a few crystal clear springs, shimmering snow clad mountains and the beauty of the solitary and desolate landscape makes all of this a fascinating trek. Padam is the largest town in the Zanskar Valley. It was once the capital of the Rajas of Zanskar. A large gompa here is revered by the local Buddhist population and the inhabitants of surrounding villages. The houses here are stone-made and are designed based on traditional Ladakhi architecture. The inhabitants of Padam are Buddhists and Muslims who speak both Kashmiri and the native language. You will cross a many high passes and walk at an altitude above 5080 metres. The highest point of the trek is Shingo-La (5080M). The trek from Darcha to Padam is difficult.
