Spread across the beautiful expanse of Periyar Tiger Reserve, Gavi is a quiet, beautiful and pristine forest haven. It is at the eastern extreme of the Pathanamthitta District at 3400 ft above MSL. These evergreen forests are abundant with magnificent Wildlife including the tiger, elephants, leopards, bears, Indian gaur, sambar, barking & Mouse deers, lion tailed macaque, and other varieties of monkeys, the Nilgiri Marten and a lot more. Gavi is the home to over 320 species of exotic birds which makes it a haven for birdwatchers. A 40 Kms drive from Kumily, the road leading to Gavi is flanked by tea plantations on either side. The two-hour jeep ride passes through hills and valleys, tropical forests, sprawling grasslands, cascading waterfalls and cardamom plantations. En route are the Pamba Reservoir which is actually a large tract of reserve forests. Hence the chances of encounters with endangered species like the Nilgiri tahr and lion tailed macaque are huge. The famous pilgrim destination, Sabarimala is a short distance from here. Another unique feature of Gavi is camping in the forests. One can pitch a tent in the camping site, which is a rarity in many Indian forests. As the dusk stretches into the silence of the night, one can feel the solitude and eeriness that comes from being in the middle of nowhere, an experience that cannot be explained in words. Gavi offers ample opportunity for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. It is a great locale for conducting group interaction sessions with it’s ample spaces for camping out in the open
