Nanda Devi National Park is spread over an area of 630 sq. km. adjacent to the NandaDevi Peak.Nanda Devi stands there as a jewel in the midst of the park. It is the second highest peak in the Indian Himalayas and is one of the most beautiful peaks in the world. To realize why one should watch Nandadevi - the Goddess of bliss, see it at sunrise and sunset, and only then you will know!!!. The park was established in 1980. The park area can be approached from Joshimath Chamoli district. A difficult trek has to be negotiated to reach this National Park. Passing over successive 7 hills called "Satkula", is not an easy task. A sheer gift after all this ardous adventure is when you are standing over Dharansi Pass witnessing Spectacular Nandadevi to your left and equally amazing "Betartoli himal" to your right, with host other peaks like Ronti, Nanda-Ghunti, Hanuman, Mrigtuni, Trishul and chaukamba on horizon! to name a few. It is an unique mix of flora and fauna is characteristic of this park. The fauna includes the Brown and Himalayan black bears, Himalayan tahr, Snowleopards, Serow and Chir pheasants.The amazing variety of flora and fauna, set amidst largely unspoiled environs has made this one of the great Biosphere Reserves of the world.
